Contest Director's Report - Steve Siebenaler

What a great weekend, as both Saturday and Sunday provided excellent contest weather conditions for the first Ohio Valley Soaring Series (OVSS) event in the 2005 season.  I was extremely pleased to see so many friends and new faces early Saturday morning as I began the pilots' meeting.  Many traveled great distances beyond the Tri-state area, from Alabama, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri and California.  Yes, California!  Jim Thomas graced our presence flying a loaner plane generously provided by Jack Strother and Jim did fly well this weekend.

Saturday's contest of 40 pilots began with an 8 minute man-on-man task and subsequent rounds were 10 minutes apiece.  Lift was available if one made the correct decisions following the persistent crosswind launches, but lift wasn't strong for May in Cincinnati.  As the day progressed, the contest leaders were bunched up, so called a 15 minute task for round 5 to shake things up a bit.  After the scores were tabulated, Rudy Siegel took first place, flying a Zenith.  Jim Bacus (Icon), Edwin Wilson (Evolution), Marc Gellart (Fazer) and Gordy Stahl (Pike Superior) completed the top 5 wood recipients.  This long day ended with folks either going to a nearby steakhouse or the Claddagh Irish Pub in Mason.

Sunday morning began with pleasant overcast skies and a sprinkle or two, but as the day progressed, the skies cleared up.  Wind direction shifted, so we launched into the wind the whole day for the 33 contestants.  Round 1 was 7 minutes, followed by 11 minute tasks in rounds 2 and 3 to make it a "thermal contest".  The final dramatic round on Sunday was 13 minutes.  Paul Sherman took top honors flying his new Icon.  Jim Thomas (Icon), Jack Strother (Icon), Tom Kallevang (Icon) and Steve Siebenaler (Pike Superior) completed the top 5.  The High Overall honors for the weekend went to Edwin Wilson.  Chip Willis took the High Sportsman for the weekend.  Both Edwin and Chip each received a pair of JR DS368 servos donated by Horizon Hobbies.  John Diniz gets a big thank you!

I would like to take this time to also thank hard working CSS club members: Barry Andersen, John Measamer, Sam Bach, Bob Scheidt, Paul Siegel and Ed Meister, just to name a few.  Without their support and maintenance of winch/contest equipment, we wouldn't have been able to conduct such a smooth running event.  In addition, a big round of thanks to Barb Wilson and the Voice of America Park staff for getting the flying site in great condition for our event.
